Question:  If I download and install winrar, does it override winzip, as a tool?

Or will the computer ask which program (winzip or winrar)  to use to extract a file?

It does not overide winzip, the two can live on your computer just fine.

If you use right clic integration and depending on which exact option you chose in your preferences you can have right-clic menus or submenus to directly extract (and also you'll probably have "open with" then the choice to use winrar or winzip.)

As for directly opening a file with a simple or double clic, if you chose winrar as the default it will open winrar, if you didn't it will open winzip. and you can define which type of files it will be the default for. For example if you still want to retain winzip for zip files, then I suggest you choose winrar as the default application only for handling rar file types (more info here : http://www.win-rar.com/winzipcomparison.html ) (and maybe other less common file types not handled by winzip)

Also note that all this is asked through installation BUT you can change the options at any time in the preferences.

I never ever saw a more crappy way to handle zip files than winXP own zip engine ... (only my opinion though)

I would agree with that.  Nevertheless, the capability is already present in the OS.

Anyway, I guess you'll rethink about it when you stumble upon the one rar file that you absolutely need
Yep, that will be when, but it's just not today. This is an important principle to follow if you want to avoid unnecessary effort. Never do today what can be put off until tomorrow. For example, I never had to deal with 98 or ME because I went from 95 directly to XP. There's also no doubt in my mind that I'll be able to skip Vista entirely and probably it's successor as well. Why learn a new set of tools only to have to relearn them again later. When you're as old as I am you find that this attitude avoids a tremendous amount of unnecessary "churning".

Hey Sole Soul, thanks for the *.zip link for all of us whiners.  You get karma for that!

I have to say though, this *.zip versus *.rar debate is rather silly, at least for this particular example.  By placing it in an *.rar archive, you've limited its usefulness, because it is guaranteed that someone won't be able to open it - and it was done for a whopping 1.2 MB.

I have to ask, is it really worth it?

I have to ask, is it really worth it?

Depends (partially) on how many people download it.

Winrar itself is, incidentally, 1.2MB.

(1205KB or 1.18MB for the picky people.)

So, in this case, statistically, even if every single person who downloaded the archive did not already have Winrar on their system, you'd still be breaking even.

If you get 10000 downloads of a file, 1.2MB difference will give 11.7GB of saved bandwith, is it worth it ? Yes when you pay hosting!

Do you care about people getting to download a useful piece of software from elsewhere ? not at all it's not your bandwith.

that's the way I see it.

(calculation note : 10000 * 1.2 MB = 12000 MB / 1024 = 11.72GB approx.)

Hmm... yeah I forgot that not everyone uses a flat rate/unlimited bandwidth plan.  My mistake.

And I wanted to do a separate post as a request for the I-mod team :
-if you guys could integrate additional visual options to be shown on the trees it would be nice, like for example : an icon for unstealable/untradable, an icon for unique tech (not present in any other tree)...
I'm throwing the idea into the air, if you guys like it, take it. If it's not possible to do it, drop it...
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the request, why not, I will tell our programmer about it.

@Solesoul: I am not a big fan of reupping our material on other side without permission.

I have reupped the posters in a zip format, please remove your download link.

here you can download the trees in zip format: http://www.i-mod-productions.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=106

PS: hey guys,  please don't make this thread a compression debate

I-Mod Stefan,

These are nice and great and all, really first rate    backgrounds and all... but I have a request:

Is there anyway to get the files that I can print out, that don't require a magnifying glass to read?... or that doesn't have the background material with it, that makes it hard to read when printed out?

Or... is there a way to filter the background stuff out for printing (that a somewhat novice like myself can do) so all you get is the tech tree for a printout?

Some of us are not as young as we use be and require progressive lenses to read.

To me, the best part of having maps and such as these, are to be able to have printouts (paper) of them to look at while playing.

Thanks!

these images are not thought to be printed out.

We are working on printable Techposters with colorsaving backgrounds.
